Flatback Butt Hinge 4"x 3"
English extruded brass flatback butt hinges are the standard by which others are judged. In the 18th century these hinges would have been cast brass and not as well formed. In other respects there is very little difference between the modern hinge and its ancestor. Many of the sizes are the same as those used on period furniture and the slightly tapered leaf profile is a direct descendant of same profile seen on the cast hinges where it made sense for manufacturing and strength reasons. The larger sizes are an excellent alternative to the common American architectural hinges in period architectural recreation. The smaller sizes are extremely strong and work well in the context of true reproduction cabinetmaking and also contemporary work where clean accurate function is preferred.
